Five minutes with…

Interior designer Miriam Fanning. Principal, Mim Design.

Talk to us about Mim Design. How did it get started, and where is it positioned in 2016? How much work is on the go at the moment?

We are a multi-disciplinary practice located in South Yarra and we’ve been operating for more than 16 years.

We are a team of creative individuals who share design expertise and inspiration through a wide range of skills such as interior design, architectural integration, custom furniture and industrial design, styling and creative brand direction.

Our work ranges from high-end residential and multi-residential, through to hospitality, workplace and retail.

At the moment we are working on projects in all these sectors, including a number of high-end hotels.

What are your proudest projects to date?

That’s a really hard question as we’ve done a lot in 16 years.

I enjoy working on all types of projects but more recently we have been doing lots of high-end residential and multi-residential projects, which are always great.

MAH Residence was particularly fun to work on, especially seeing the concept through from visualisation to construction and then handing over the project to the homeowners and seeing looks of delight on their faces.

Can you describe your style in three words?

Timeless. Purposeful. Detailed.

What are some of the interior design trends of 2016 when it comes to off-the-plan developments?

It’s all about creating a feeling of spaciousness. This is achieved through detailed planning, striving to achieve a seamless flow and opting for authenticity when it comes to choosing materials.

Are there any fabrics or colours or pieces of furniture that you are loving at the moment?

Where would I start?

I adore cobalt blue and any classic pieces that add to a collection of furniture, such as the Flag Halyard Chair from Cult, which I have my eye on for its sculptural look and comfort. I also admire Patricia Urquiola, Hans Wegner and Walter Knoll, whose furniture I would always love to include in a project, if not own myself.

You also work on retail spaces, as well as hospitality, events and workspaces, what’s your favourite kind of project to work on?

I love working on retail spaces because, being based around a product and a purpose, they are intrinsically individual. At the moment we’re working on a fantastic café called AU79 located in an old garage in Abbotsford. We are enjoying working within the existing shell and refining the space to suit the product.

What is your golden rule when it comes to designing a space?

Make sure you get the plan right.

How does Melbourne’s design scene differ to Sydney’s or is there not much variation?

Melbourne interiors are more restrained in their use of materials and palette. Both cities have a great eye for detail, which is something we embody within our practice.

How do you keep your work fresh?

I imagine with so many apartment developments on the market it would be difficult to find a different angle for each project.

For us it’s always about creating something individual and unique for every project. We design to suit a project’s target demographic, product offering and location. Just as people are individual, to us each project has its own personality. It’s our job to give each space a soul.

If you were giving advice to someone decorating their own apartment, what would your top three tips be?

  • Always select authentic pieces of furniture that become part of your collection as a homeowner. Don’t settle for replicas.
  • Ensure you get the lighting right within a space, either via a pendant, freestanding lamp or table lamp. Lighting is paramount when creating ambiance within a room.
  • I can’t overstate the importance of good quality artwork. It’s something you’ll have forever and enjoy every day of your life. Invest in a piece that you love.
