Gardening can be an intimidating thing, especially if you are growing one in your apartment - you are growing something, and once you begin, it can be exhilarating and self-rewarding. So for you nervous beginners out there, here are some tips that you should stick to throughout your gardening education.

1) Oh yes, location, location, location

Yes, no matter where you go, this age old adage applies. Placement of your apartment-garden is imperative to its success.

Soil, water and sun, and lots of it - they are the three key things to remember when planting your seeds. If you have a spot that has all three, then that is where you are going to begin.

2) Don’t lose hope, Luke…

With gardening there is almost always a reason that is identifiable when something doesn’t go your way. So do not lose hope.

If you have poor soil, till it up add some nutrients and go again. If it is water related, then you are not watering your plants enough - and there is only person to blame for that, and that is you.

When it comes to sun, your plants generally need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. If you find that you only get around 4 hours of sun a day, then maybe you’ll have to accept that you will never be able to grow cucumbers. Instead, choose shade-friendly options such as root vegetables and leafy greens.

3) Make it easy on yourself

If you are new to gardening, don’t make it hard on yourself - gardening can be difficult enough as it is. Place your garden in an area that allows easy access for monitoring, watering, planting and tilling.

Whilst vertical gardens may look pretty, they are not as customisable as pot-planted options. Make sure that your gardening area is in the vicinity of your gardening tools - if you are growing large plants, moving them, and the soil inside, is a tough task.

Before you set out, plan out the area and commit to it.
