Depending on who you are, and what you do, the couch can either be an imperative tool to keep the kid’s still, or an area to chat with friends over a glass of wine.

When choosing a new couch for your home, there are multiple considerations that you need to take into account, as this can be an expensive piece of furniture.

1)         Size

Size matters, but make sure it suits the room. A couch should fit seamlessly into the flow of your living room rather than dominate it.

The size of your couch will depend on what else you want to fit in the room; be it some lounge chairs, a coffee table, or even multiple couches.

Take notice of the corners of the room, as well as what else will be in there.

Draw a floor-plan of your room, with accurate measurements, including furniture which is, or may be, in your living room – not only will this serve as an helpful tool for planning your furniture, but it may also help with online shopping, as you will know the exact measurements that will fit best.

2)         Orientation and functionality

It is important to understand what your couch will be used for. Will it be used for watching TV, keeping the kids still, or for a quite drink on the weekends?

How you choose to answer these questions will define where you put your couch, and what kind of functionality you require from it.

For example, if you are using your couch for entertaining, considering a couch set up that will occupy a semi-circle shape will make it more appropriate for entertaining.

3)         Shape

Now that you know what you want your couch for, the shape is the next thing to consider.

By this stage, you should know what is going to work, and what isn’t, but in case you haven’t, here are some of your most common options.

L-shape

These couches are shaped like an L. Do not mistake these for couches with a chaise, as they are different. Despite how good they look, L-couches are designed for larger living spaces, and for those that really know what they want – these couches are not particularly flexible, so be wary of this, especially if you want to make an it last multiple moves.

Ottoman

These couches are by far the most flexible, and can offer you the same luxuries as a chaise couch, but with the ability to both remove the ottoman from the scene, as well as convert the ottomon into a coffee table by placing a large copper dish on top.

Chaise

Chaise couches are all the craze - and rightfully so. They are relatively affordable, and offer you a place to put your feet up. Coming in two, three, four or five seaters, chances are  you will find a chaise that suits your needs and sizing.

4)         The feel

This is also one of the most important decisions you will make when choosing your couch. What is often the case here is that you have found your ideal couch, but you had the feel of it.

Couches made of vinyl or a thick weave can be uncomfortable for many as they present themselves more as a design over function alternative.

Buyers should also check the depth of the couch – make sure that there is plenty, if not excessive room for you to sit on the couch comfortably.
