It was Sydney’s turn for the crème de la crème of the state’s architecture to be acknowledged at the 2016 NSW Architecture Awards.

This year, the night’s longest standing honour, the Sulman Medal - introduced in 1932 and given to a public building of exceptional merit - was awarded to the ‘quintessentially Australian’ Kempsey Crescent Head Surf Life Saving Club by Neeson Murcutt Architects.

The jury noted: ‘this project is completely engaged with the environment and the culture of coastal NSW. The execution and detailing is beautifully refined and resolved, but still tough and robust to suit the extreme, corrosive environment and the demands of a “club” client.’

Sixty projects across New South Wales were acknowledged from a shortlist of 79, and a total entry pool of 179.

Back closer to the city centre, a number of major inner-city works were acknowledged for balancing the demands of the commercials public and urban interests, and their contribution to the city landscape.

That included 5 Martin Place by JPW & TKD architects in collaboration, which took out the Commercial, Heritage and Urban Design categories, and was described as a ‘masterful example of strategic, design-led planning’.
