Pantone names colour of the year for 2017

If you’re looking to add a pop of colour to your apartment, take note – colour vanguard Pantone has announced their pick for 2017’s colour of the year.

 

It’s called Greenery, with Pantone describing it as a ‘tangy yellow-green.’

 

According to Pantone, Greenery, or, to give it its full name, Pantone 15-0343, is ‘A refreshing and revitalising shade, symbolic of new beginnings.” They also describe it as a versatile, ‘trans-seasonal’ shade that lends itself to many colour combinations. Pretty handy for inclusion in your interior scheme without having to throw everything else out.

 

Since the early 1950s the Pantone company has been defining and standardising colour for the design, printing and fashion industries through its widely used Pantone Matching System of colours. More recently, in 2007 Pantone introduced a range of paint colours, based on a limited selection from their extensive colour range.

 

But it’s the annual selection of the colour of the year that creators, artists and designers look out for to ensure their products for the following year are on-trend.

Pantone’s experts and international colour gurus get together and decide upon the selected colour for the following year. And in most cases, they have a tangible and current reason for their choice based on the state of the world at the time.

 

This year’s selection, for example, is all about rejuvenation and calm in the troubled times we’re currently living. Says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute:

 

“Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalise, Greenery symbolises the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”

 

Heavy stuff, but it’s hard not to agree with the sentiment. And to make the use what will become 2017’s most fashionable colour in your apartment, Pantone’s site also has some handy combinations to help pair Greenery with other colours.

 

We often talk about the importance of not necessarily following every trend, particularly as it can date your apartment quite quickly. But having a feature piece with the colour of the year, perhaps a cushion, throw or art piece, will help freshen up your space.

 

Just remember, though – come 2018 Pantone will be suggesting you change it…
