A mixed-use Abbotsford apartment development designed by architects Rothelowman has won the prestigious President’s Award at the 2016 National Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) Awards for Excellence.
The three-stage project, developed by Hamton and ISPT, encompasses the buildings Eden, Haven and Sanctuary, and has been masterplanned to include premium facilities such as a rooftop cinema, lobby bars and a health and wellbeing centre.
The project also won the national award in the High Density Housing category.
These achievements follow the development’s success at the 2015 Victorian UDIA awards, when it won awards in the categories of Master Planned Developments and High Density Developments.
Working closely with the client and council, Rothelowman designed the space to allow public access through the centre of the site to the banks of the Yarra River, integrating the riverfront to the building.
This new connection continues Melbourne’s tradition of highly activated, linear pedestrian thoroughfares.
Rothelowman’s design acts as a catalyst for the establishment of a cohesive, identifiable community, and the site has delivered a strong sense of place with shared spaces acting as the social hub of the area.
“Eden, Haven and Sanctuary have allowed us to add a high quality, meaningful public space to the existing urban fabric Abbotsford, particularly with the removal of the private threshold,” says Rothelowman Principal Chris Hayton.
