Smart greenhouses and wheatgrass shelves — creating healthy apartments

Whether it be yoga, the gym or a crazy diet, healthy living is an increasingly important aspect of life nowadays.

As this trend continues, apartment developments have begun to introduce ways of aiding our healthy lifestyles at home. And two Master’s students have co-developed a technology for growing a small garden right in your apartment.

They have launched Caulys, a startup to market their smart indoor greenhouses and installed prototypes at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Their aim is to “bring agriculture downtown” by offering a contraption that will let you grow your own basil, lettuce or strawberries — even in the middle of a city.

They also hope that by allowing consumers to cultivate their own produce, they eliminate the need for plastic packaging, pesticides, and GMOs, and prevent the carbon emissions associated with shipping food over long distances.

The Caulys greenhouse will be easy to use. All you’ll have to do is plug it in, place a soil unit in each shelf and fill the reservoir with water. Then you can just sit back and watch your plants grow.

The startup hopes to be selling their invention at the end of the year at the equivalent of around $4,500, but it might be some time until you can get your hands on one. Until then, what else can you do to inspire healthy living in your apartment?

Although out of many people’s price range, innovative healthy-home company Delos may give some answers with their first residential building in West Village, New York.

Stepping inside automatically transports you into a healthy bubble — the air is even cleaned by a UV Air Sanitizer, which kills airborne bacteria, and a Particle Filter that traps allergens.

But, amongst all the high-tech gadgetry, grand piano, and sleeping Labrador are ideas you can take for your own apartment.

The kitchen, for example, has a wheatgrass and juicing section to support green drinking habits. Both of these items are purchasable — the wheatgrass station is available from amazon or eBay.

Although Delos have created countertops that are seamlessly constructed to eliminate bacteria-trapping crevices, wiping your own kitchen tops is not that hard. It helps keep anxiety at bay while removing dust and other allergens.

There’s no need for a high-tech sediment and carbon filter when you can purchase a water purifier yourself. Not only will it remove impurities from your water, it can improve the taste — and when water tastes better, you’re more likely to drink it.

We’re sure we’d all love the bedroom in West Village. It comes with acoustic-damping walls and windows that keep out sirens and sidewalk shouting, and blackout shades do the same for sunlight and street lamps. A sleep garden full of lavender and night-blooming jasmine can also help by releasing calming scents from their most natural source.

Just like lavender plants, blackout blinds are just as achievable in your home, albeit a tad more expensive. These day and night blinds can offer the perfect flexibility for light, while not compromising your privacy day or night.

This just goes to show, you don’t need your own mini greenhouse or be a millionaire to have a home that exudes healthiness.
