We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to picking the perfect pooch these days.

Whether you’re after the latest designer dog, a shaggy mutt from the pound, or a smiley Labrador, the options are endless.

Except, however, when it comes to mixing man’s best friend and apartment living.

While ultimately it is your choice, it’s important to consider what’s best for not only your new dog, but you as well.
 
Such as, think of how an active, working dog like a kelpie will go being cooped up inside all day while you’re at work?

We’re no psychics, but it’s a pretty safe bet you may just return home to find your favourite cushion in a hundred pieces.

Thankfully, the good news is some dogs are renowned for their compatibility with apartments.

Here, we list the best breeds to consider.

1. Pug

If you’ve sat down for a smashed avo in any inner-city suburb, it’s likely you’ve shared the communal outdoor table with a pug. They’re everywhere these days. And the reason they’re so popular in the hip and happening ‘burbs is because they’re the ultimate apartment dog. Not to mention, incredibly cute to look at. Pugs take up little space, they’re quiet, and they don’t require a huge amount of exercise, making them the perfect apartment pet.

2. Weimaraner

This adorable breed has very short fur, so if you’re fastidious about dog hair all over the couch, this one could be for you. They’re docile, loyal, clean and full of personality. But they will need access to a backyard or courtyard. So while they may be okay for much of the day, make sure you’re prepared to take them for a walk when you’re home to burn up some of that hunting-dog energy.

3. Basset Hound

With their droopy eyes, floppy ears, and adorable face, it’s hard to resist a basset hound. And the good news is they’re suitable for apartment living. But beware; they do shed quite a bit, so make sure the vacuum is handy.

4. Greyhound

Surprised? Don’t be. It’s a misconception greyhounds are high energy and need a heap of exercise. In actual fact, these racing dogs are incredibly lazy, and love nothing more than lounging around all day. All they need is half an hour a day of fresh air to stretch their legs, and you’ll have a very happy, low-maintenance dog. Not to mention, they come with an added dose of good karma… there’s so many greyhound rescue groups out filled with gorgeous former racing dogs looking for their forever home. 

5. The Great Dane

Bear with us. Yes, these dogs are huge. But along with that, they’re also lazy and like greyhounds, would be pretty happy blending in as an ottoman for your couch. Like all dogs, they do need a walk, but nothing compared to the needs of say a border collie or a cattle dog.
