2019 Interior Design Awards sure to inspire

The shortlist for the 2019 Interior Design Awards has been announced, and amongst the nominated projects are some highly inspirational projects.

Set up to celebrate excellence in Australian interior design, the Awards are a partnership between the Design Institute of Australia and Artichoke Magazine. Let’s take a look at some of the shortlisted entries.

Award for Residential Decoration:

Curatorial House

Designers: Arent&Pyke

Cleverly combing the past with the present, Curatorial House marries contemporary furnishings with the finishes and features of Hollywood’s 1930s glamour. Details such as the black Japanned floorboards contrasting against bright white walls, and an eclectic yet perfectly curated collection of furnishings, art pieces and objects, this is a lesson in being bold.

Award for Residential Design:

Canning Cottage

Designers: Bicker Design

The judges particularly liked Canning Cottage’s clever use of a small space (the whole home only takes up thirty-two square metres) as well as its simplicity. Light and natural tones and timeless materials help exude an uncomplicated aesthetic throughout this fully self contained studio space.

Award for Emerging Design Practice:

Highbury Grove

Designers: Ritz&Ghougassian

Renovating a Victorian-era home in Melbourne’s Prahran, designers Ritz&Ghougassian employed the robustness of concrete block walls and a polished concrete floor to create an urban space that still has room for warmth and texture. This is stylised contemporary elegance at its most confident – right down to the minimalist courtyard garden.

Premier Award for Australian Interior Design:

Space & Time

Designers: Russell & George

The standout feature of this predominantly monochromatic interior is its stunning undulating ceiling. Adding an organic softness to a space crafted from otherwise hard surfaces, the light, cloud-like forms contrast to an otherwise dark and commercially focused environment crafted from custom components.
