When you think of city living you don’t often imagine collecting eggs, honey or veggies from your roof, but Arkadia makes all this possible.

Residents of Defence Housing Australia’s (DHA) visionary new apartment development, located in the inner city, will have the opportunity to harvest and cook their breakfast without leaving the building.

As part of a City of Sydney design competition, DKO and Breathe Architecture delivered an award-winning design drawing on the area’s former brickworks history, integrating recycled materials, passive energy design and green spaces.

The development will deliver a mix of 152 apartments as well as a park; veggie gardens; barbeque spaces; a ground-floor cafe; a rooftop with dining tables and city views; chicken runs; and even an apiary (you know, for bees).

Arkadia’s design maximises opportunities for social interaction through the connection of spaces, all abilities access, the arrangement of seating and orchestration of views, and by providing a mix of communal and semi-private spaces that accommodate small groups and individuals.

These unique communal spaces encourage residents to step outside, interact with nature and one another. DHA understands the benefits of community cohesion and the importance of social interaction.

“Dwellings that are good to live in and good for the environment go hand-in-hand,” says senior development manager Pedro Pan.

“We’re incorporating this approach in more of our developments and it’s encouraging to see this philosophy being adopted more widely to blur the traditional boundaries between landscape and building, especially within urban environments.”

The courtyards and rooftops also contribute to local biodiversity by increasing the biomass and diversity of plant species included within the landscape.

With completion due this year, buyers may also be able to celebrate Christmas in their brand new apartment. DHA have recently opened two apartments, to show off the stylings of the warm and cool colour schemes which are available. To make an appointment call Colliers International today to arrange a preview.

First home buyers interested in getting into the property market will be happy to know there are a range of Government incentives that may help at Arkadia. For instance, under the First Home Owners Grant, if the purchase price of your apartment is under $600,000 you may qualify for a $10,000 grant.
