The end of an era as Golf House swings in to Surry Hills

Since the mid 1960s, the neon-lit Sharpy’s Golf House sign has illuminated the Surry Hills night sky.

That is, until a few years ago, when the accompanying golfer perched on the roof swung his final hole-in-one, as the sign flickered into disrepair.

Sharpies Golf House is now a derelict building, a reminder of a bygone era when neon-signs dominated inner-city Sydney’s skyline.

Now, what remains will be demolished to make way for an innovative, and contemporary new apartment development, which pays homage to the site in more ways than its name.

‘Golf House’ blends modern sophistication with industrial materials such as copper, timber and brick, to create a luxurious yet urban space.

But this is no ordinary development.

Renowned Australian fashion designer Collette Dinnigan is at the helm, alongside Peter Israel of PTI Architecture.

“We laboured over the details that take an apartment from just being a space, to being a home full of warmth and character. The copper detailing on the façade will have a strong, bold presence but it’s the layout and flow of the residences that capture the natural light and the city views that create the joy we want this building to provide,” said Israel.

Collette Dinnigan adds, “we spent hours meticulously planning the design and layout of each of the residences. It was important for us to create a liveable, contemporary home ensuring each apartment has space to relax and entertain.” 

With Ms Dinnigan responsible for interiors, it comes as little surprise that only top quality finishes have been used throughout the 46 apartments.

Think Carrara marble bench tops and splash backs in the kitchen, recycled timber floors and Miele appliances, and floor-to-ceiling windows allowing plenty of natural light to flood the space.

An open-plan living, dining and kitchen area connect through to spacious terraces, many of which look out over Sydney’s iconic skyline.

“Luxury and efficiency has been carefully considered in each space, with a great deal of time having gone into each aspect to ensure each area is easy to use and truly feels like a home” Ms Dinnigan says.

Golf House’s boutique size means there are just seven floors, with a selection of one, two and three bedroom apartments on offer.

There is also a basement carpark fitted with number-plate recognition technology, giving each resident peace-of-mind when it comes to safety and security.

And of course, with any premium development, its the shared amenities that create a sense of community.

The top floor will be home to a residents-only, north-facing rooftop, filled with lush greenery and bordered by panoramic views of the CBD.

As for location, well there’s a reason Surry Hills is so highly sought-after.

Minutes walk from the city, it still has a sense of village-atmosphere.

The tree-lined streets are filled with boutique shops, hip cafes, and top restaurants, as well as heritage-listed double-storey brick terraces.
