Fitzroy continues to offer up boutique residential projects that embrace its eclectic, creative vibe. OneFifty Cecil Street adds to the mix with a distinctly collaborative approach.
Just 18 apartments and one penthouse make up this six-floor building, with a choice of one, two or three bedrooms. And it’s self-evident that developers Airworx put their passion for this neighbourhood (their offices are not too far away) directly into their projects.
Airworx worked with architects Rothelowman to develop a unique approach to the building’s exterior, utilising a pairing of textured concrete and black feature window framework to create a facade with enough quirky character for the location. Over time the plan for cascading greenery will soften the facade further.
With an eye for practical yet stylish finishes and materials, Fiona Lynch has conjured up interiors of timber, aged metal, light marbled stone and leather that are contemporary but still have a friendly aimlessness to them. A reflective surface or two here and there add a further touch of detail.
There’s a bright and airy feel to these homes that’s lifted by the open plan layout, bringing plenty of natural light inside through large glazed doors. Leading onto spacious private balconies which offer space enough for outdoor relaxing and entertaining. Some of the city views are just ripe for a sunset gathering.
Kitchens seem to effortlessly mix the functional with the elegant thanks to sleek lines and the aforementioned rich palette of materials. We love some of the design details here, including soft leather cabinetry handles and a handy utensil rail to help keep essential surfaces clear for cooking prep. Built-in appliances also make life easier, with dishwashers by Fisher & Paykel and stovetops by Miele. All drawers are soft-close, too.
Tapping into the local design and craftsmanship even further, Mark Tuckey has been enlisted to create custom handmade furniture pieces for each home. From handy drop zones for keys and such, to simple things like a place to drop off your bags, these homes have been given a greater level of everyday consideration than many we’ve seen lately.
Bathrooms continue the same styling for a completely coordinated home, with marble, timber and tiling that subtly evokes a sense of calm whilst still being urban in its appeal. There’s plenty of exposed shelving for essentials and styling, with mirrored cabinetry, nicely finished in light timber, to hide away everything else. The soft light globes are also a nice touch, whilst the elegant, powder coated basin and storage vanity make a world of difference to the space.
There are plenty of reasons Fitzroy is one of Melbourne’s consistently sought-after inner suburbs. Just 3km from the CBD you can take your pick from cool eateries, coffee shops, chic bars and boutique fashion stores from the vintage to the uber-cool. But Fitzroy’s charm lies in the way the new mingles with the old, glued together by the creative arts and music that emirate from every laneway.
OneFifty, with its eclectic yet faultlessly balanced design and styling, couldn’t be more perfectly suited to its neighbourhood.
