The former manufacturing site for Dairy Bell Australia in Malvern East is set to be transformed into a premium new apartment development.

Leading developer Little Projects has received the green light to convert the iconic site on the corner of Belgrave and Waverley Roads into a 132 apartment complex, featuring a mix of one, two and three bedroom dwellings.

The Dairy Bell’s closure in 2015 marked the end of an era for many Victorians who grew up enjoying the iconic ice-cream brand.

Little Projects bought the site last year, and spent the last 12 months working on a low-rise design to suit the streetscape of Malvern East.

“The redevelopment of the former Dairy Bell site has been carefully considered by our team from both a community and design perspective,” explains Little Projects’ Development Director, Leighton Pyke.

“As well as being in a desirable location, with mostly north-facing apartments, this new lifestyle community will activate the streetscape and deliver refined amenities that will cement this development as the place where people want to live.”

The $100 million project is situated opposite a park, and will include extensive landscaping and ground floor retail opportunities.

Malvern East train station is nearby, as is Chadstone Shopping Centre and the city’s major arterial roads.

The project has sought inspiration from the nearby parklands and greenery, and therefore will feature a significant focus on quality landscaping, while delivering an architectural statement that allows maximum light in each floor.

Designed by Alfred De Bruin from Adeb Architects in collaboration with SJB Architects, the design features a curvilinear facade with the upper levels set back to allow for spacious terraces.

The gardens and courtyard apartments will open up to a Jack Merlo-designed garden.

The luxurious new development will also come with a rooftop terrace, alfresco dining and barbecue facilities, a gymnasium and central garden.

It marks the third residential launch in 2016 for Little Projects following Dux Richmond Hill on Bridge Road, Richmond and Grace Victoria Quarter in Auckland, New Zealand.
