As Collingwood continues its transformation, the importance of smaller projects with real character has never been more apparent. This is certainly true of these thoughtful boutique apartments at Dight Street.

With the project’s one bedroom apartments already sold, the remaining homes at Dight Street are four contemporary two bedroom exclusive split-level sky lofts, each a testament to the rewarding partnership between developers Milieu and architects Fieldwork.

Renowned for their small scale residential projects, Milieu are sticklers for detail when it comes to creating the highest quality homes. With Dight Street, their intention was to incorporate distinctly Japanese design approaches for homes that are elegantly understated.

Taking a trip to Tokyo, the team from Milieu brought a raft of influences and inspiration back to Melbourne for the project. The simplicity of the architecture and the subtle use and combination of materials is particularly Japanese in nature. From the stylish brass capped entrance to the tranquil internal spaces, Dight Street has a quietly welcoming confidence.

The first thing noticeable about the living areas is the ceiling height – an impressive 2.7m in most areas, giving these homes a spacious feel. The floor to ceiling windows open out onto terraces that genuinely extend the living space. If you’re a fan of homes that offer that ideal indoor and outdoor lifestyle, Dight Street has achieved it.

A rarity in the design of apartments these days, each home enjoys a dual aspect to the north and south, adding further natural light throughout the day and creating a cross flow of ventilation for a breathable, healthier living space.

A balanced choice of materials includes a real point of difference in the use of cork flooring for the kitchen and living areas, giving them a sense of quiet and calm. Terrazzo stone, brass fixtures and brushed stainless steel all interplay beautifully throughout, creating warm interiors that are as perfect for entertaining as they are for simply relaxing. Modern adaptability is at play here.

It’s great to see Milieu clearly decided to put sustainability at the top of their list, with features such as low energy lighting, gas hot water, a solar system to minimise energy consumption and double glazing for greater temperature control in winter and summer.

We know storage is always at a premium, but there’s plenty available here thanks to the dedicated storage cage for each apartment. Add bike storage, allocated car spot and secure, video monitored front door security and you start to see the picture of a totally considered building.

Plans for a ground floor coffee house, as we often see, have the double benefit of giving residents a fast morning caffeine hit whilst at the same time creating genuine connections to the local community. There’ll even be a typical Japanese style vending machine in the lobby, which anyone who’s been to Japan will appreciate as a ubiquitous feature of Japanese living.

The vibrant centre for some of Melbourne’s most contemporary arts and gallery spaces, Collingwood’s residential creds are maturing whilst its eclectic vibe remains strong. This is the suburb for your cool and creative side to feel at home – plus you’ll be surrounded by more eateries, bars and coffee spots than you’ll ever have time to visit.

There’s no surprise that Milieu, whose offices are in Collingwood, care so much about contributing quality residential projects to the neighbourhood. And with Dight Street, they are continuing to add to its rich heritage.
